Chapter Nine

Conner

“Sacrifice of what?” Seth blurts out, and my knuckles whiten as I grip the back of his chair. He smells clean, like soap and burning leaves, and for the hundredth time I regret not staying with him last night.

But I couldn’t. If I had, I’m not sure what would’ve happened. His scent and those sardonic eyes pushed me to the edge. It took every ounce of self-control I could muster not to force him to tell me who he saw die. Then do something he may or may not have enjoyed.

Dammit!

The scholar who can help us solve this case had to be a wolf, didn’t he? And not just any wolf – an alpha. A cocky as all fuck alpha throwing my boyfriend passing glances every few seconds. If this asshole tries anything I’ll. . . .

“The harvest or items of value, most likely. The Sumerian gods were greedy bunch.”

Alwen lets out a long, exasperated sigh. “But he was killing people with these.”

For the first time since we met the man, Cage’s eyes widen. “What? These symbols were used to murder someone?”

Seth glances up at me, and I frown down at him. “You said not to give away too much information since we didn’t know who we could trust.”

He nods stiffly. “Yeah. Clair Mallory died when they showed up on her skin. She was laid out in that circle.”

The alpha looks at the paper I faxed him the week before – a drawing of the circle and its symbols.

“It’s a warlock’s circle of power. They use it to channel energy for large spells, although these are unusual in their arrangement.”

“Like calling on lightning bolts?” my partner asks.

Right. He said the hooded man killed the hunters with lightning, I only saw the flash before I passed out.

“Plasma,” Cage says in a know-it-all tone that grates on my last nerve. “But yes, they can do that.”

“So he’s a warlock?” I growl and the chair cracks under my hands.

The alpha frowns and rubs his chin. “That doesn’t make sense. No warlock can kill someone with a spell like you described. But that’s how necromancers bring back the dead – symbols on the body to awaken it from the afterlife.”

A shiver runs through my bones. Give me the moon and forest any day of the week over this.

“So he’s not working alone,” Seth mumbles.

We expected as much, but the idea that more than one person is this fucking crazy is problematic to say the least.

“What about spells to control people? Can anyone use them or is it specific like this?”

The man frowns. “Only sorcerers can implement a control spell, although other magic users can utilize it after it’s been set.”

“Are you sure? Only sorcerers?”

Cage frowns. “Of course I’m sure.”

Seth takes a deep, shuddering breath, and I rub my hand down his back. Silence stretches around the room for several minutes, the lights buzzing over our heads and the scent of old books tickling my nose.

“If that’s all, I really need to get back to my work.
